From the onset anything that promises a no junk, meals made properly with free range meats, wholegrain spaghettis and no MSG, added sugar and preservatives for our children’s on the go meals gets me very excited.
Checkers and Gordon Ramsay brought in Ramsay daughter number two to help celebrity chef dad bring to life a very smart, healthy and beautiful packaged array of healthy foods that not only give parents a slight break in the kitchen, but also allows us to feel guilt free as what we are feeding our kids is healthy with great ingredients.
My naughty but perfect sons aged seven and five (born on the same day) were lucky enough to be judges for Lishe www.lishe.co.za review of the Oh My Goodness food range brought to you by Checkers, Gordon and Matilda Ramsay.
What the boys ate was an array of yummy readymade meals, flavoured waters, snacks and treats. Here, for some added information regarding the Checkers Oh My Goodness kids food range is sugar contents, taste and over all outcome is a brief outline regarding what was tasted….
- Oh My Goodness Oat Crunchies
- Oh My Goodness Butter cookies
- Naartjie flavoured sparkling water
- Apple flavoured sparkling water
- Coconut Pie Nibbles
- Beefy Lasagne
- Beef stew and Butternut mash
- Mango and Carrot Roll
- Guava Rolls
- Strawberry Fruit Gums
- Mini Apple Rice Cakes (made with wholegrain rice – healthier with more essential nutrients than its white counterpart).
When looking at the sugar contents of all the goodies we (yes, we the adults tested too with delight) tried and tasted, all seemed to me in moderate RDA per the GSM packaging of the products. It would be petty to point out the 1, 2 or 3 extra gram of sugar over the RDA, but all in all it is a better ingredient based ready-made children’s meal range. Also, the ingredients list was faithful to what the “Oh My Goodness “range promise is. Although there are no dairy free meals in the Oh My Goodness range at least there is an option that is gluten free. With regards to flavored waters I as a rule do not advocate them, but rather waters or sparkling waters – on the odd occasion it really is OK.
The boys had an overall positive response to the snacks such as the mini rice cakes with my youngest son inhaling all the butter cookies, strawberry fruit gums and guava roll – it’s important to note, if your kids tend to be picky eaters. The Coconut Pie Nibbles was a split verdict – half of us liked the natural taste and smell of the just-enough-sweetness of the dates and subtle sweetness of the vanilla extract – pure extract not fake essence – the other half felt the polar opposite.
The prepared meals of beef stew with butternut mash and beef lasagne were happily eaten by my seven year old but he’s younger brother was having none of it. When the foods were tasted by the adults (we say adults but we were behaving like our kiddie tasting judges as we laughed, ate, tasted and played in the morning sun whist on shoot) we found that the beef stew was a little tastier than the lasagna, but ultimately it was a pleasant taste.
We loved the Strawberry fruit gums, the guava rolls – especially that it came in single 20 gram bags so it is easy for on the go or lunch box ideas – and personally I was very impressed with the Oat Crunchie cookies.
Ultimately Checkers Oh My Goodness children’s food range is an A OK by me and my beautiful sons and Checkers is so confident of the Ramsay’s entire Oh My Goodness range that they offer a money back guarantee better known as the taste guarantee. Will a ready-made meal suit everyone and be to everyone’s taste and expectation? No. But – there is always a but – when we look closer at the stone ground flour, the clean meats, the no added policy and the rest of the impressive ingredients list I am confident that the meals offered by the Oh My Goodness ready-made meals is a hit rather than a miss.
See kids real impressions of the range.
